I bought this for my husband to use for fishing and he loves it. We have multiple sizer of this cooler.Trust me on this, This is a great cooler and her is why, it will hold up to the punishment you subject it too. The latches are adjustable, and may need slight adjustment to ensure the best ice retention, they are easier to use than the Yeti, and I own yeti’s as well. I can say I won’t buy another yeti, as this cooler is cheaper and better. From the back of the truck to the boat, to falling out of both, being dragged and thrown, it has held up. Now the real abuse, here come the kids, in, out, in, out, I can say this won’t happen with a yeti until the kids are older as there latches are a pina. They have beat on it with anything they can make a sword, bat, or recently found item of destruction. Lid has not warped either, like on the so called number one yeti, that has a Sheti warranty. Save your money, pick your color and buy an Engel! Go beat the P!$$ out of it and right them a review. This cooler is exactly what I was looking for. I’m not going on week long excursions and if a bear gets to my cooler it means I’m likely already dead. All I wanted was a quality cooler that would keep beer cold for a weekend at the lake. It came a day BEFORE estimated arrival date.... during the week of the Fourth of July which I can only imagine is the peak of cooler season....I was amazed. Took it out for the weekend of the fourth to the lake. 10 lbs bag of ice over top 35 beers. Put beer in at fridge temp and covered with 10 lbs bag of ice around 7:00 am Friday morning, drank at a regular pace all day Friday and the cooler was in the sun. Saturday morning it had plenty of ice. I added the rest of the beers and topped off with a 5 lbs bag of ice just to be safe. By Sunday night I still had enough ice to have a few more cold ones. I cant speak to the extreme claims that dominate the cooler advertising these days but if you want a cooler for your beer that will last all weekend in the sun, this is it. At $250 it was well worth it.When I first received the cooler, I did a test with a couple bags of ice and one ice block. I was very disappointed that it melted faster than expected. By day 2 a third to half of the ice was melted - not what I expected based on all the reviews I read. The latches felt loose when in the closed position and there was not a lot of tension. I tried the paper test where you place a sheet of paper in the gasket area of the cooler with the lid latched shut (trapping the sheet of paper between the lid and the lip of the cooler opening). I was able to pull the sheet out with with some effort from the front part of the cooler near the latches. It was not sealing properly in that area.I loosened the screws on the latch hardware and made minor adjustments to the placement of the latches. There was a little bit of play on both the top hardware piece and bottom hardware piece. I moved the top hardware up a smidge and the bottom hardware down a smidge. I did this to both latches. Once all the screws were tightened, I tried closing the latches; it made a thunk sound when I pushed the latches all the way down to shut the lid - just what I had hoped for. There is now more tension on the latches. I did the paper test and was not able to pull the paper out.We used it on an 11 day road trip in May. We set out with 1/3 of the cooler filled with ice at the bottom and the rest of the space taken up by food. We purchased ice once after 5 days to top it off. At the end of the 11 days there was still half the original ice at the bottom of the cooler. It kept the food cold and no food was spoiled. It worked really well.I did a lot of research before I bought this ENG50 cooler and I couldn't be happier. It is heavy for its size, but I expected that from a well insulated cooler. I do recommend buying the divider and racks, as it makes it very easy to keep the cold separated from the frozen. I also checked with the manufacturer and found that you can use dry ice in it, but they recommend that you wrap the dry ice in paper and crack the drain open about 1/4 turn to keep the carbon dioxide gas from building up...or keep the lid slightly open. Legal disclaimer - I am not a scientist, and I do not work for Engel, so do not take my word for it and end up suffocating because you did not do your own research! However, Youtube people say that carbon dioxide can be dangerous, so don't use dry ice in a confined space. But again, I am not an expert in dry ice handling or usage, or much else. I just know that I love my cooler, and I recommend you avoid buying a cheap one and buy this one, because it makes you "cooler." Get it?! It also makes you smarter for not buying a piece of crap.I purchased this about a month or so ago and have used it on two camping trips. One was about 6 hours from my home and I stayed in a cabin, the other was a 3 day camping trip in the woods. On the first trip I packed everything with ice sheet packs. It stayed super cold for the entire trip and even decided to bring ice cream back which it stayed frozen solid for the 6 hour trip! On the 3 day camping trip I packed the ice sheets again and everything stay cold the entire time, no issues with items getting even warm on top! It is a wonderful cooler, very sturdy, and I even use it as a table in my tent!Purchased this cooler because of the small foot print. The Engel 50 is a deep cooler and I was able to put in 18 bottles packed around two 4 pound ice packs, 20lbs of ice, and two 2 pound ice packs on top of the ice. Cooler has been in my garage now for 6 days. I change out the top ice packs every two days and still have 60% of ice retention in the cooler. My favorite feature is the locking handles, they secure the lid tightly which produces a great seal.Great value for a rotomolded cooler. Just returned from a 5 day trip with plenty of ice left over. This was my first nice cooler. After a lot of research, decided on Engel over Canyon, Yeti, Orca and Pelican. Do yourself a favor, if you spend this much on a cooler, research how to pack it properly. Pre-chill, blocks v cubes, ice to contents ratio, etc. Just get on YouTube. The first time I used it, I was disappointed with the ice retention but it totally user error. Really happy with it now that I know how to use it! Accessories are great, and the latches are much better than competitors in my opinion.
